Acupuncture for Labor Induction

"Hi, I heard that acupuncture can help with labor induction. Do you guys do that?" - This is a call we receive almost daily. At South Philly Community Acupuncture we see several patients each week looking to induce labor naturally. Although it is completely normal to go past your due date, especially as a first time mom, many care providers schedule medical inductions at 41 weeks. This can create a lot of stress and doubt that the body will go into labor on its own.

From evidence based birth: "The traditional way of calculating the estimated due date (40 weeks after the last menstrual period) is not evidence-based. Instead, it is more accurate to give people a range of time that they will probably give birth:

  • About half of first-time mothers will give birth by 40 weeks and 5 days after the LMP, with the other half giving birth after that time point

  • About half of mothers who have given birth before will give birth by 40 weeks and 3 days after the LMP, with the other half giving birth after that."

So, how does acupuncture work for a labor induction?

Acupuncture helps to soften the cervix, stimulate the uterus to produce contractions and relax the body, which essentially gets the baby moving. We often hear patients saying, "Wow, my baby was so active during the treatment!" That's exactly what we want. The idea behind this treatment is to move baby downward. We also use something called e-stim, which literally stimulates and enhances the moving effects. The points that are done during an induction treatment are points that are contraindicated in pregnancy because they can stimulate uterine contractions.

We normally see pregnant people who are 40 weeks 5 days or more. Although, we will take patients earlier if they are facing a medical induction. The protocol is 3x in a row, for instance Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. If that does not work, then it is suggested to let the body rest, and come back in a few days again 3x in a row. Luckily, we're open 7 days a week to make scheduling simple! While we have had patients whose water ruptured on the acupuncture table, we generally tell people to expect 3 treatments.

Is there evidence supporting the information?

Yes! Yes, there is! While there is more research to be done, we found this information from Evidence Based Birth: "There was also a Cochrane review on acupuncture for labor induction published in 2013. In this review, the researches looked at 14 randomized control trials of acupuncture for labor induction and cervical ripening, that included more than 2,200 participants. They were mostly interested in these questions: Does acupuncture influence the cesarean rate, serious problems with the newborn, or serious health problems with the mother?

They found that people who had acupuncture were more likely to have greater cervical ripening, as evidenced by increased Bishop scores over a 24-hour period. This was compared, both to usual care, no puncture, and to what we call a sham acupuncture where they pretend to do acupuncture with needles, but they’re not actually doing it. So, the true acupuncture did have a beneficial effect on the cervical ripening, compared to both of those other treatments.

If you pull out the two best studies from that Cochrane review, one was the largest study. This was one done by Romer in the year 2000, where they assigned 553 people from Germany to acupuncture for labor induction or that kind of sham acupuncture that we were talking about earlier. They also included a usual care group that had no acupuncture of any kind. They found that the acupuncture group had shorter labors, and more cervical ripening, compared to the two other groups."

Below are photos of what a typical induction treatment looks like. While it's not your typical rejuvenating acupuncture treatment, it is certainly a way to help get things moving! If you have more questions, just give us a call 215-279-3932.

Thank you to Evidence Based Birth for this great information and resources! Please check out their site if you're interested in evidence based information related to pregnancy & birth.

A Personal Story from Jodi: How Acupuncture Changed Her Life

Two years ago Jodi had a stroke. Since then she has suffered from muscle weakness on her right side, numbness & tingling in her shoulders, face, and arm. She was referred to a physical therapist, but it was not helping her so she began acupuncture treatments. She immediately noticed that acupuncture was helping treat her symptoms. In June 2016, and then again in December of 2016, Jodi was in 2 car accidents and has since suffered severely from the stress on her body.

When her body is in distress she develops a hemiplagic migraine which make it looks like she has recently had a stroke. She can’t smile, her muscles get weak and she often loses muscle control completely. The symptoms can become so extreme that she will have temporary paralysis of one side of her body. She will also get a cognitive block where she can’t speak.

Jodi has recently moved here and was looking for a new acupuncture clinic. When she came in it was very difficult for her to speak a sentence. She was so sweet & open and began to share her story with me. I knew South Philadelphia Community Acupuncture would be the perfect fit for her new acupuncture home and signed her up for an appointment. She has been a dedicated patient here for months now.

Since coming to our acupuncture clinic she says her speech is much better and it's helping  bring control back to her muscles"I can talk, I can open my eyes, the tingling and numbness is gone, my nausea is gone. The scraping helps with the inflammation, some days I can't turn my neck because my muscles are so tight but it releases that pressure." - Jodi

Jodi's doctors prescribed drugs that were not helping, but just masking the issues she was having. She said they did not believe in the alternative treatments she was doing, such as going to acupuncture and using CBD oil. But, she knows that the benefits have been very real and life changing for her. She has since referred quite a few others to our clinic because she knows acupuncture can help heal others too! Jodi comes in about twice a week and says that the treatments generally last about 3-4 days for her symptoms.

This is just a snapshot of one of her many treatments done by Justine, one day before running her first marathon! Thanks so much for sharing your story with us Jodi! If someone you know is suffering and thinks that there's no cure for them, tell them to give acupuncture a try!

A Word from Dr. Jeff Meyers, a South Philly Acu Regular!

Dr. Jeff Meyers M.D. of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation has been getting acupuncture for nearly 30 years. He has been a regular of South Philly Community Acupuncture and getting treatments with Lauren Buckley L.Ac for many years. After seeing Dr. Meyers in our clinic almost every week I wanted to chat with him about his love for acupuncture and see if he would recommend it to his patients.

You may be surprised, but we actually treat many doctors. There are lots of doctors who know that acupuncture works and love the benefits of it. In recent years, we have been seeing more and more patients who are referred by their doctors for issues such as pain management, fertility issues, anxiety and depression, etc. We would love to have more doctors in our community who would refer their patients to get acupuncture treatments, because it works!

Anyways, Dr. Meyers expressed that he has been getting acupuncture treatments to help with sleep, to energize him, to relax him, and any other particular things that pop up in life. He said that he finds it very helpful and he absolutely recommends it to his patients & he refers them here, South Philadelphia Community Acupuncture.

"I think acupuncture is an integral component to health and well being and helps keep you balanced!"- Dr. Jeff Meyers M.D.

Thank you Dr. Meyers for spreading the word about acupuncture!

What our patients have to say...

I think the best way to get the word out about the benefits of acupuncture is by interviewing our patients. I want them to be the ones to share their stories. Ultimately, we rely on referrals from our patients to their friends/ family/ co-workers/ etc. for our business, that's how the community model of care works.

I will be sharing the stories from our patients who would like to talk about their experience with acupuncture. If you would like to share your story, please get in touch, send us an email to info@southphillyacu.com ! If this is your story, please feel free to share with everyone you know!

First, I interviewed Ben C. who came in for a stress fracture in his ankle, this was his 4th treatment in our clinic. He found out about our clinic by through friends and walking by.

What made you want to try acupuncture? How's it working for you?  "I was planning to come for a while, got injured and was having inflammatory health issues. I didn't want to take a pill for the rest of my life and wanted an alternative option. This is my 4th treatment, things are healing well. I'm going to keep doing it. I think setting aside the time and the intention is helping the healing process. Once my ankle is healed, I want to see if it helps for my other health conditions too. It's worth a shot. I enjoy the acupuncture, but the sleep I get here is the best!"
