New Acupuncture Patients

General Information & Scheduling

If this is your first experience with acupuncture, we are so glad you chose us.  We will stand by you from beginning to end.

Here are some things to know before your first treatment with us:

What to Expect

Your first visit to South Philly Community Acupuncture will include:

  • A 10-15 minute consultation with your practitioner.  During the initial consultation, you and your practitioner will review your Patient Information Form, which includes your medical history and details about the condition for which you are seeking treatment.  The practitioner’s goal is to get to know you, your condition, and your habits so that they can offer you comprehensive, high-quality care.

  • A 60-minute acupuncture treatment. To begin the treatment, your practitioner will place 15-30 sterile, disposable, hair-like needles at various acupuncture points on your body as you rest on a table in our community treatment room.  You may be required to roll up sleeves, pant legs, or shirt to accommodate the needles.  After the needles are inserted, your practitioner will leave you to rest for 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the condition being treated.  Many patients feel completely relaxed and fall asleep on the table, and we encourage them to do so.  When your treatment is complete, your practitioner will remove the needles and give you time to collect yourself.

  • Post-Treatment Recommendations. Your practitioner may suggest lifestyle changes, herbs, or natural remedies from our apothecary to aid in your healing process. The decision to try any or all of the suggestions is yours.

  • Payment. Payment is due in full at checkout.  We do not accept insurance, but we accept cash, credit, and check.

The cost of a New Patient Community Acupuncture treatment is $65 - $85. Appointments thereafter are $40 - $60. You decide how much to pay within the range of the sliding scale.

Community vs. Private Acupuncture

While most of our patients opt for treatments in the community space, we also offer Private Acupuncture Treatments in a quiet healing space which accommodates only one patient.  Private acupuncture is recommended for those with complex conditions, as the practitioner will have extra time and space to treat both sides of the body.  Private acupuncture is also recommended for patients new to acupuncture who may prefer a little extra privacy on their first visit.

New Patient Private Acupuncture is $125. Existing Patient Private Acupuncture is $110.

Private treatments typically last 1 - 1 ½ hours.

How to Prepare Your Body for Your First Treatment

Be sure to eat a healthy snack and avoid alcohol and caffeine. Alcohol and caffeine affect your pulse, which is a primary diagnostic tool for an acupuncturist.

Give yourself plenty of time to arrive on time. Your body will receive a greater benefit if you arrive in a calm and natural state. If you are driving, give yourself plenty of time to find street parking.

Wear Loose-Fitting Clothing

To receive an optimal full-body treatment, you will be required to roll up your sleeves and pant legs, and you may be asked to remove your shirt. Wearing the appropriate clothing will make it easier for your practitioner to reach all of the necessary acupuncture points on your body, and it will make your treatment more comfortable and enjoyable.

Some ideas for what to wear:

  • Gym clothes

  • Yoga pants that can roll above the knee

  • Tank tops & shorts

Please arrive early if you would like to change clothes in the bathroom before your treatment.

Please refrain from wearing:

  • Perfumes

  • Scented deodorants

This is a courtesy to others in the treatment room who may be sensitive.

After your First Treatment

Relax and drink plenty of water.  Allow 24 hours for the effects of acupuncture to settle in. You may feel differently immediately after treatment, or you may feel no change at all. In rarer cases, symptoms are exacerbated the day after treatment, which should not cause alarm.

Things to Remember:

  • Acupuncture is a process.

  • Each treatment builds off of the last.

  • Healing the body takes time. Patience is paramount.

You Must Fill Out an Online Intake Form Before Your Treatment

We are as paperless as possible. After scheduling your treatment, you will receive a welcome email, which will prompt you to set up an online account and complete the Patient Information Form before your visit. The form will take about 20 minutes to complete online. If you are not able to complete the Patient Information Form before your visit, please plan to arrive 20 minutes early to complete the form.

Please, Please, Please Be Prompt!

If you arrive more than 5 minutes late, we may not be able to treat you.

Our practitioners work on a very tight schedule, seeing new patients every 15 minutes. Late arrivals (more than 5 minutes late) may be difficult to accommodate, but we will always do our best. That said, we do enforce the Policies below.

Our Cancellation Policy

Your appointment time is reserved just for you. A late cancellation or missed visit leaves a hole in the therapist's day that could have been filled by another patient. As such, we ask at least 24 hours notice for any cancellations or changes to your appointment. Patients who provide less than 24 hours notice or miss their appointment will be charged a cancellation fee of $40. Private Appointments will incur a $110 cancellation fee.

Appointments can be cancelled through our online booking system, or by sending a text to 215-279-3932 at least 24 hours before your scheduled appointment. If you need to cancel within the 24-hour window because of an emergency, please let us know.

Our Late Policy

Your appointment time is reserved just for you. Our practitioners work on a tight intake schedule, seeing new patients every 15 minutes. If you arrive more than 5 minutes late for your appointment, we may not be able to guarantee your time slot and you may be charged a Cancellation Fee of $40. Please be considerate of your appointment time. We will always do our best to accommodate everyone.
